The Next "Big Thing" in Tech - Is Here

A few months ago, a friend texted me asking if I had tried out this new website called I responded with, "No, I haven't. What's it about?" Within a few minutes, my friend sent back a long text with an extremely well-written bio about me, describing in detail how I was known for "my compassion and willingness to go the extra mile for clients and was able to help countless people achieve their financial goals," and how I am a "shining example of how faith and hard work can lead to true success."

There was much more written, but you get the gist of it. It was beautifully written. I immediately updated my LinkedIn profile description.

His next text read, "I asked an AI system to write a story about you."

I had to try it out. So, I signed up for the free account and logged in. Yes, it's free! At the bottom of the screen was a white box I could type into and ask questions. You may be asking, "What kind of questions?" The answer is just about any question you can think of.

So I typed in "Explain ChatGPT to me as if I was a child."

The response was, "ChatGPT is a special computer friend that can talk to you just like a real person! It has learned a lot of things by reading books and stories on the internet, so it knows all sorts of interesting stuff. You can ask ChatGPT questions or tell it things, and it will try to understand what you mean and give you a good answer. It's like having a smart friend who knows a lot about everything!"

Then I typed another question and another. It's true and knows just about everything written in books or on the internet.

The technology is awe-inspiring and can save you much time in researching something. Since my initial attempt, I have used ChatGPT daily, from researching various topics to asking it to draw up a contract I needed. It can be used for just about any content generation, from marketing blogs to product descriptions. It can help you update your resume or even help you learn a new language. It can also set reminders, schedule appointments, and help manage your to-do lists. It can even offer you friendly conversation if you are feeling lonely.

ChatGPT evolved out of an artificial intelligence organization called OpenAi, which promotes itself as making its technology, data, and AI systems widely accessible to just about anyone who wants to use it responsibly and "in a safe and beneficial way." Of course, that is the real challenge of the future...trying to limit the abuse of artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is just one of many technologies that use the resources of OpenAI. Various industries are leveraging OpenAI's machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities to improve business operations, drive innovation, and create new products and services, including healthcare, finance, energy, transportation, etc.

Microsoft (MSFT) invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and said it would commit another $10 billion over the coming years.

In return, Microsoft's cloud business, Azure, benefits significantly from storing most of OpenAi's data on its cloud.

In its latest earnings report, Microsoft's cloud business grew 38% from the previous year. As OpenAi continues to grow exponentially, this partnership should prove quite lucrative, which is why Ranch Cap holds a core position of MSFT in our RC Stock Appreciation Model. Nvidia (NVDA), another core holding, also invested in OpenAI and should benefit since their graphics processing units (GPUs) are used extensively in the research and development work done by OpenAI and powers their data processing and machine learning.

This new generation of AI technology is just getting started. So keep it on your radar and learn how to benefit from it. It could be the tailwind the US economy needs to overcome many of the present challenges we face today. Let's hope it ends up being for the greater good of humanity, although I'm sure new challenges will arise.
